Abstract
lndigofera hirsuta is a Nigerian medicinal plant used traditionally for the treatment of several diseases such as wound healing, analgesic, diuretics, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory while the leaves serves as chief sources of green manure for improving soil fertility among others. The aim of the study is to conduct preliminary toxicity study, qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analysis of crude methanol extract of I. hirsute aerial part. The plant material were extracted with methanol for 48 h and the resulting extract was subjected acute toxicity study and phytochemical analyses using Lorke’s method and standard procedures. The LD50 of the crude methanol extract of the plant was estimated to be 1131.3mg/kg indicating that the extract is relatively toxic. Additionally, the qualitative phytochemical screening of the extract revealed the presence of flavonoids, steroids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, cardiac glycosides and anthraquinones while quantitative evaluation of the same extract indicated the concentrations of these metabolites to be flavonoids (270.039+0.013 mg/l00g), steroids (9.100±0.007 mg/l00g), alkaloids (59.74±0.014 mg/l00g), tannins (21.66+0.03 mg/l00g), saponins (1.3+0.0001 mg/l00g) and anthraquinones (0.205+0.003 mg/100g). Thus, the preliminary findings of the study expose the plant’s rich bioactive phytochemical that could be responsible for it therapeutic quality in traditional medicine.
