Abstract
Financing remains a critical challenge confronting the effective administration of higher education in
Nigeria. The sectoris characterized by recurrent industrial actions by staff unions, unstable academic
calendars, student unrest, delayed payment of salaries, inadequate campus facilities, dilapidated
infrastructure, and poor implementation of educational policies and programmes resulting from
insufficient funding. Higher education plays a pivotal role in knowledge creation, innovation, human
capital development, and socioeconomic transformation; therefore, sustainable financing is essential for
fostering institutional innovation and ensuring long-term growth.
The study examines financing and sustainable models for higher education innovation in Nigeria.
Specifically, it explores traditional funding sources and emerging approaches capable of supporting
sustainable financial frameworks for institutional innovation. The study also investigates strategies for
financial diversification, effective resource management, as well as the challenges associated with
inadequate funding and policy inconsistencies that impede innovation within higher education
institutions. Drawing on existing literature and best practices, the study highlights the need for
innovative and diversified funding mechanisms that reduce excessive dependence on government
allocations.
The study concludes that achieving sustainable financing for higher education innovation requires
strong collaboration among government, public and private stakeholders and the wider society. It
recommends the adoption of innovative funding strategies, improved financial accountability, and policy
consistency to promote continuous institutional transformation, enhance competitiveness, and ensure
the attainment of global best practices in higher education.
