SUSTAINABILITY AND THE FUTURE: ALIGNING HIGH EDUCATION TO THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGS)

ABSTRACTS:
High Education institutions as critical actors in advancing global sustainability, continued to function with governance structures, curricular and research priorities that remain insufficiently aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), despite the adoption of the United Nations 2030 agenda. This disconnect has impacted the capacity of graduates of these institutions to address complex social, economic and environmental challenges.
This paper seek to examines strategic pathways for aligning higher education with the SDGs, with the focus on curriculum reforms, institutional operations and stake-holders engagement. The paper argues that integration of sustainability principles across disciplines, adoption of policies such as green compus and strengthening partnership with industries, local communities and governments are essential mechanism for transformation. The discussion highlights both opportunities and systemic barriers to implementation, drawing on current literature and institutional case studies, which includes funding constraints, disciplinary silos and management challenges. The analysis concludes that aligning higher education with SDGs is not merely imperative ethically but a strategic necessity. Higher education can produce graduates equipped with the competences and values required to lead resilient, inclusive and sustainable development in the 21st century by embedding sustainability into its core mission
