Track: Sustainability and the Future
The study was carried out to assess the Socio-Economic and Environmental Impacts of Local Industries in Niger South, Niger State Nigeria. water samples were collated from three different points in three replica periods along the water course that is upstream, downstream and mid-stream that represent the location of the industries to the water sources. A total of 9 water samples were collected in the entire location. The collected sample analysis was analyzed using standard analytical methods of AOA (1990). Results revealed that Water samples obtained from rivers that flow within the respective industries shows increase in contamination for some physio-chemical parameters. The turbidity values of sampled water from River Ega (9.7 ±0.5NTU, 11 ±0.8NTU, 11.3 ±0.5NTU, and 12.7 ±0.5NTU) and River Landzu (14.7 ±2.1 to 18.3 ±0.5, 15 ±0.8NTU and 16 ±0.8NTU), were above the NSDWQ standard (5NTU).The study recommended that, the cottage industries workers to find ways towards mitigating the impacts of the cottage industries on the communities through utilization of environmentally friendly methods and proper waste infrastructure and management techniques should be employed in the respective industries to avoid pollution and contamination of water courses.
