Track: Sustainability and the Future

Indiscipline and Religious intolerance that manifested in the young generation of this country pose a big threat on national unity and cohesion. Religion which is intended to be a catalyst of promoting peace in the society is now used to shatter the peaceful coexistence of a heterogeneous Nigeria. Social studies education inculcates in students the knowledge, skills, attitudes and actions that are considered important in the relationship and interaction of man and those around him on one hand, and the entire environment. This paper examines the role of social studies education as it relates to mitigating acts of indiscipline as well as curving religious bigotry that remains a bottleneck in the development of Nigerian society. One of the major findings of this paper indicates that attitudes and beliefs as well as emotions that triggers conflict and intolerance are all learned human behaviors and can be modified through the effective teaching and learning of social studies. Furthermore, the paper outlined some recommendations that would enhance religious tolerance among students through social studies education. Such suggestions include: curriculum reform, teacher training, community engagement as well as policy support.
