Abstract
Nigeria is home to over five hundred (500) indigenous languages, yet most libraries across the country lack adequate systems for organising, preserving, and providing access to these linguistic resources. Existing cataloguing and classification standards such as Library of Congress Classification (LCC), the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) do not sufficiently accommodate the structural and cultural complexities of Nigerian languages. As a result, indigenous language collections remain marginal, poorly indexed, and inaccessible to users. This research proposes the development of a customized design system for Nigerian language collections in libraries. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study will investigate current practices, identify gaps, and design a culturally responsive classification and management framework. The findings are expected to support improved documentation, preservation, and accessibility of Nigerian languages, strengthening national identity and contributing to long-term cultural sustainability.
