Track: Inclusion, Equity and Digital Access

The increasing use of advanced technology tools, such as digital technologies, Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud computing, virtual reality, big data analytics, digital scholarship platforms, and knowledge-driven economies, has greatly changed tertiary institutions around the world, with academic libraries also being impacted as they are recognized as essential components of future-ready learning environments. Despite the growing integration of these technologies in African higher education institutions, challenges such as insufficient infrastructure, limited funding, digital exclusion, skill gaps, and unequal access to information resources continue to exist, obstructing sustainable educational advancement. Libraries should be regarded as strategic catalysts for effective educational development rather than merely as fountains of information resources, as they play a crucial role in bridging the divide between technology, information access, and educational innovation within Smart learning environments. Based on the current discourse surrounding digital transformation, AI-enabled library services, digital literacy, and sustainable education, this paper maintains that academic libraries hold a critical and central role in promoting digital inclusion, fostering innovation, and supporting sustainable educational development within the changing educational setting. By fulfilling their roles in research support and innovation, facilitating digital inclusion, promoting AI literacy and usage, and encouraging lifelong learning, academic libraries can significantly contribute to achieving one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4: Quality Education) and enhance knowledge humanities throughout Africa. The paper recommends the technological empowerment of academic libraries should be prioritised to strengthen their initiatives in constructing future-ready educational frameworks and knowledge societies in Africa. It concludes that the evolution of academic libraries into intelligent, inclusive, and technology-driven learning centers is essential for establishing resilient and future-ready educational environments.
