Track: AI, Emerging Technologies and Future Learning
The study analyzed emerging technologies used in teaching vocational and technical education in North Eastern Nigerian tertiary institutions. It specifically, identified the emerging technologies available, determines the relationship between the utilization of emerging technologies and effectiveness of teaching vocational and technical education and identified the challenges associated with the utilization of emerging technologies. Multistage sampling technique was used to sample 376 respondents and data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean and frequency and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation. The result revealed that digital projectors (91.0%), learning management systems (85.1%), mobile learning applications (79.3%) and digital assessment platforms (76.1%) were the most available emerging technologies, while artificial intelligence tools (37.2%) and virtual laboratories (44.4%) were the least. The Pearson Product-Moment Correlation analysis result shows a correlation coefficient of r = 0.68 indicates a strong positive relationship, which implies increased in utilization of emerging technologies is associated with improved effectiveness of teaching vocational and technical education. Furthermore, the result disclosed that the highest-rated challenges were unreliable electricity supply (= 3.71), insufficient training of lecturers on emerging technologies (= 3.62), inadequate funding for acquisition of technologies (mean score = 3.58) and inadequate access to modern technological equipment (=3.55), while the least-rated challenge, although still considered significant, were cyber security (=2.08) and data privacy concerns (=1.76). The study recommends that government agencies, institutional administrators, and relevant stakeholders should allocate adequate funds for the procurement, installation, and maintenance of emerging technologies especially advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence tools, virtual laboratories, and simulation software, which were found to be less available in the institutions, with the significant positive relationship between the utilization of emerging technologies and teaching effectiveness, educational policymakers, institutional administrators and lecturers should prioritize the adoption and effective utilization of emerging technologies and regular training workshops, seminars, conferences, and certification programmes should be organized to enhance lecturers' competencies in the use of emerging technologies which will focus on Learning Management Systems, artificial intelligence applications, virtual laboratories, simulation software, digital assessment tools, and other innovative instructional technologies.
