Abstract

The increasing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies has transformed the way information is created, organized, accessed and used in educational institutions and society. These developments have also redefined the functions of libraries and the responsibilities of librarians. Modern libraries are no longer limited to the collection and preservation of printed materials, they now serve as important centers for digital information services, technology-supported learning and research support. As a result, librarians play a crucial role in helping users effectively utilize digital resources and technologies. This paper examines the role of librarians in supporting the integration of AI and digital technologies in education and society. It discusses how librarians contribute to digital literacy development, information management and the implementation of technology-based services. The paper reviews the application of AI in library operations including information retrieval, cataloguing, user services and digital repository management. The study shows that librarians are important stakeholders in promoting access to digital information, supporting teaching and learning, facilitating research activities and reducing inequalities in access to technology and information resources. Despite the challenges associated with digital transformation, librarians continue to acquire new skills and adapt their services to meet changing user needs. The paper concludes that librarians are essential to the successful, ethical and inclusive integration of AI and digital technologies in contemporary education and information services.
