The emergence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is transforming academic communication, digital literacy, and language learning across higher education. While these technologies present new opportunities for improving teaching, learning, and academic writing, many African higher education institutions continue to rely on conventional pedagogical approaches that inadequately prepare students to communicate effectively and ethically in digitally mediated academic environments. This study examines the role of Generative Artificial Intelligence and digital literacy in transforming English Language education for future-ready African higher education. The objectives were to: (i) examine the relevance of GenAI and digital literacy in English Language education; (ii) identify barriers to their responsible and effective integration into language teaching and learning; (iii) evaluate their potential to enhance academic writing, critical thinking, communication skills, and digital competence; and (iv) propose a pedagogical framework aligned with Education 5.0 and Smart Campus initiatives. The study adopts a qualitative review of contemporary literature, educational policies, and international best practices in AI-supported language education. Findings indicate that integrating AI-assisted writing tools, digital literacy strategies, and collaborative learning platforms significantly enhances students' writing proficiency, learner engagement, academic integrity awareness, and communication competence while supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 and SDG 10. The study concludes that curriculum innovation, faculty digital upskilling, responsible AI use, and institutional policies are essential for preparing graduates capable of communicating effectively in the rapidly evolving digital knowledge economy.
