ABSTRACT
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming higher education by creating new opportunities for personalized learning, student support, and data-informed institutional decision-making. In Africa, however, higher education institutions continue to face challenges such as unequal access to digital resources, limited technological infrastructure, student attrition, and concerns regarding graduate preparedness for an increasingly digital economy. These challenges underscore the need for innovative approaches capable of fostering inclusive, resilient, and future-ready learning ecosystems. This paper examines the role of artificial intelligence in promoting student success and advancing the transformation of higher education in Africa. Drawing on contemporary literature and relevant theoretical perspectives, the paper explores how AI technologies can enhance learning experiences, improve student engagement, support academic achievement, and strengthen institutional responsiveness. Particular attention is given to the potential of AI-driven systems in personalized learning, predictive student support, adaptive assessment, and educational administration. The paper further discusses key barriers to AI adoption within African higher education, including infrastructural deficits, digital inequality, ethical concerns, data privacy issues, and institutional readiness. Based on these discussions, a conceptual framework is proposed to guide the development of inclusive and resilient learning ecosystems that integrate digital infrastructure, institutional leadership, faculty capacity, student support mechanisms, and responsible AI implementation.
The paper argues that the strategic and ethical integration of AI can significantly contribute to student success while supporting the long-term transformation and sustainability of higher education systems across Africa.
