Abstract
The research aims to evaluate students' trust in generative artificial intelligence (AI) and their intention to use AI for academic learning in Federal College of Education, Ididep, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Two hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted descriptive survey research design and the population of the study consist all the 587 year 2 students in the Federal College of Education, Ididep, 2025/2026 session. Purposive sampling techniques was used for the study to select 300 students that constituted the sample. A well validated ‘Students' Trust in Generative AI Questionnaire (STGAIQ) and Students' Intention to Use AI for Academic Learning Questionnaire (SIUAIALQ) were used to collect the required data. Simple Linear Regression was the statistical tools used for analysis of the data collected. The result of the analysis revealed that there is a significant influence of students' trust in generative AI on the pre-service teachers’ intention to use AI for academic learning. Also, there is a significant gender difference in students' trust in generative AI on their intention to use AI for academic learning. Sequel to the findings of this study, it was recommended, among others that teacher education institutions should work on building students’ trust in generative AI by offering structured training that covers the capabilities, limitations, accuracy, and responsible use of AI tools like ChatGPT. This approach will help pre-service teachers gain a well-rounded confidence in utilizing generative AI for their academic pursuits.
