Track: AI, Emerging Technologies and Future Learning
The fast development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought about transformational practices in education across disciplines, including language education in higher institutions. AI-powered technologies such as intelligent tutoring systems, machine translation tools, speech recognition applications, chatbots and adaptive learning platforms are increasingly being added into language teaching and learning. This paper explores the role of AI in enhancing language instruction in higher education, examining its potential to improve learner engagement personalized learning, language proficiency development and assessment practices. Reviewing recent literature and emerging educational trends, the study discusses how AI supports both teachers and students by facilitating individualized feedback, autonomous learning and access to authentic linguistic resources. The paper also highlights challenges associated with AI adoption, including ethical concerns, data privacy issues, digital inequality and the need for adequate teacher training. Findings suggest that while AI cannot replace the pedagogical expertise of language educators, it serves as a valuable complement that enhances teaching effectiveness and learning outcomes. The study concludes that successful integration of AI in higher education language classrooms requires institutional support, digital literacy development and the establishment of ethical guidelines for AI use. The paper contributes to ongoing discussions on the future of technology-enhanced language education and provides recommendations for educators, policymakers, and researchers seeking to leverage AI for sustainable language teaching and learning.
