The rapid advancement of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is transforming teaching, learning, research, and institutional management across higher education worldwide. However, its adoption in many African higher education institutions remains constrained by inadequate digital infrastructure, limited AI literacy, ethical concerns, and weak governance frameworks. This study examines the role of human-centred Generative Artificial Intelligence in transforming teaching, learning, and research for future-ready African higher education ecosystems. The objectives were to: (i) examine the relevance of human-centred GenAI in enhancing teaching, learning, and research; (ii) identify barriers to its responsible and ethical adoption in higher education; (iii) evaluate its potential to improve intelligent learning systems, personalized education, academic productivity, and institutional innovation; and (iv) propose a governance framework for integrating GenAI in alignment with Education 5.0 and Smart Campus initiatives. The study adopts a qualitative review of contemporary literature, policy documents, and international best practices in AI-enabled education. Findings indicate that responsible deployment of GenAI enhances digital pedagogy, research collaboration, student engagement, and institutional efficiency while advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 and SDG 9. The study concludes that AI governance, curriculum innovation, faculty capacity development, digital infrastructure investment, and institutional AI policies are critical to building resilient, inclusive, and future-ready higher education ecosystems across Africa.
