ABSTRACT
The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging digital technologies is transforming higher education globally. In Nigeria, tertiary institutions are increasingly exploring AI-driven solutions to improve teaching effectiveness, learning outcomes, research productivity, and institutional management. Technologies such as generative AI, machine learning, learning analytics, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), adaptive learning systems, educational chatbots, and intelligent tutoring systems offer unprecedented opportunities for personalized and inclusive education. However, their integration faces numerous challenges, including inadequate digital infrastructure, insufficient funding, low digital literacy, ethical concerns, data privacy issues, and policy gaps. This review examines the current status of AI and emerging technologies in Nigerian tertiary institutions, explores their applications in teaching and learning, identifies major barriers to adoption, and proposes strategies for sustainable integration. The paper concludes that while AI has significant potential to revolutionize higher education in Nigeria, its successful implementation requires coordinated investments in infrastructure, human capacity development, policy frameworks, and ethical governance.
