Artificial Intelligence and Capacity Building for Sustainable Business Operations in NigeriaByProf. Paul Aondona AngaharDepartment of AccountingRev. Fr, Moses Orshio Adasu University Makurdi.&Dr. Stephen GwarDepartment of AccountingRev. Fr, Moses Orshio Adasu University Makurdi..Abstract The adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents a transformative opportunity for advancing sustainable business practices in Nigeria. This paper explores the role of AI in enhancing operational efficiency, promoting resource optimization, and supporting environmentally responsible practices in Nigerian businesses. With a focus on sectors such as agriculture, energy, waste management, financial services, and supply chain management, the paper discusses how AI can drive sustainable development by improving decision-making processes and minimizing environmental impact. However, the integration of AI in Nigeria faces significant challenges, including inadequate digital infrastructure, high implementation costs, limited AI literacy, and regulatory uncertainties. The paper argues that capacity building—through investments in digital infrastructure, AI education, and targeted policy support—is critical for overcoming these barriers and fostering a more inclusive and sustainable business ecosystem. The discussion also addresses ethical considerations and the social implications of AI adoption, such as data privacy concerns, job displacement, and the potential widening of the digital divide. By examining these factors, the paper offers practical recommendations for promoting AI-driven sustainability in Nigeria, providing a roadmap for businesses, policymakers, and educational institutions to collaborate in harnessing AI for long-term socio-economic and environmental benefits.
