ABSTRACTThe study determined whether SSCE and UTME scores were predictors of first year NCE CGPA Academic Achievement of 2020/2021, 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 sessions Among students of Federal College of Education (Technical) Bichi, Kano State. The study was guided by three objectives and three hypotheses that were all tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study employed correlational research design. The population of the study was one thousand seven hundred and eighty- seven (1787), one thousand eight hundred and fifty- one (1851) and one thousand nine hundred and ninety-six (1996) for the 2020/2021, 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 respectively. Similarly, the sample size of the study was three hundred and sixty- three (363), three hundred and sixty-one (361) and three hundred and thirty (330) for the 2020/2021, 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 respectively. The sampling technique used in selecting the subjects was cluster and simple random sampling techniques. Row SSCE and UTME scores for 2019,2020 and 2021 sessions were collected and correlated with First year NCE CGPA for three sessions visa viz 2020/2021,2021/2022 and 2022/2023. The data were all analyzed using multiple regression analysis. The results showed that 2019/2020 SSCE and UTME scores does not predict the first year CGPA students’ scores in 2020/2021. Similarly, the SSCE and UTME scores in 2020/2021 session (as an entry qualification) does not predict the 2021/2022 first year NCE CGPA students’ academic achievement of students of Federal College of Education (Technical) Bichi. Finally, the SSCE and UTME scores in 2021/2022 session, does not predict the first year NCE CGPA students’ academic achievement in 2022/2023 session. The study concluded that, SSCE and UTME scores do not in any way assist students’ to perform better first year NCE CGPA academic achievement in 2020/2021, 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 respectively. The study recommended that, here should be post UTME examinations before students are admitted to study NCE program and that additional credits should added for the SSCE pre-qualification requirements aside the normal four credits that was considered before candidates were admitted to study NCE program.
