ABSTRACT 2
Environmental education and green advocacy have become essential tools for promoting environmental sustainability in Nigeria amid growing concerns about climate change, pollution, deforestation, and resource depletion. This study examines the role of social media in enhancing environmental education and supporting green advocacy initiatives across the country. Social media platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube provide accessible channels for disseminating environmental information, raising public awareness, and mobilizing citizens toward environmentally responsible behaviors. Through digital campaigns, online discussions, and community engagement, environmental organizations, educators, and activists have leveraged social media to influence public attitudes and encourage participation in environmental conservation activities. The study highlights the opportunities presented by social media in reaching diverse populations, particularly young people, while also identifying challenges such as misinformation, limited internet access, and low digital literacy in some communities. The findings suggest that effective integration of social media into environmental education and advocacy strategies can significantly contribute to environmental awareness, public participation, and sustainable development in Nigeria. The study recommends stronger collaboration among government agencies, educational institutions, and civil society organizations to maximize the potential of social media for environmental sustainability.
