Track: Digital Transformation in Higher Education

Distance teacher education and training (DTET) plays a vital role in achieving sustainable development in Nigeria by enhancing teacher’s skills and knowledge, improving teacher’s quality and effectiveness, and increasing access to quality education. However, DTET in Nigeria face significant challenges including outdated curriculum, inadequate infrastructure, limited access to resources, and poor teacher engagement. To address these challenges, this study proposes a re-engineered distance teacher education and training model that leverages innovative mobile learning solutions. By leveraging on innovative mobile learning (IML), Nigeria can re-engineer DTET, enhance teacher quality and contribute to sustainable development. Innovative mobile learning leverages mobile technology to create engaging, accessible and personalized learning experiences. It combines mobile devices, advanced pedagogies, digital content and collaborative tools. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research investigates the current state of distance teacher education and training in Nigeria, identifies the challenges and opportunities for innovative mobile learning, and develops a framework for re-engineering distance education and training through mobile learning. The finding of this study highlight the potential of innovative mobile learning to enhance teacher engagement, improve teacher quality and student outcomes, and promote sustainable development in Nigeria. The proposed re-engineered model provides a roadmap for policymakers, educators and stakeholders to transform distance teacher education and training in Nigeria and achieve sustainable development goals.
