Track: Digital Transformation in Higher Education
Digital transformation is advancing higher education in West Africa by improving access, collaboration, and administrative efficiency through AI, virtual learning, and cloud computing. However, this rapid expansion has introduced significant cybersecurity vulnerabilities that threaten institutional sustainability and effectiveness. This paper examines key challenges facing West African higher education institutions, including cyberattacks, phishing, data breaches, identity theft, online exam malpractice, and unauthorized database access. It also analyzes the impact of poor cybersecurity awareness, inadequate ICT infrastructure, weak institutional policies, and limited funding. Using a descriptive analytical approach, the study evaluates how these vulnerabilities affect academic integrity, institutional reputation, data protection, and educational continuity. The paper recommends stronger cybersecurity policies, investment in secure digital infrastructure, AI-supported security systems, and regular digital literacy training for staff and students. These measures aim to enhance institutional resilience and support the sustainable development of digital education across the region.
