Abstract
The study examined the role of digital innovations in North-Eastern Nigerian higher institutions. It specifically described the benefits derived from the utilization of digital innovations and identify the challenges hinder the effective utilization of digital innovations in the higher institutions. Multistage sampling technique was adopted to sample the 209 respondents and the data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Garette Ranking Analysis. The result revealed that the major benefits derived from digital innovation utilization in higher institutions include improved access to learning resources (91.4%), enhanced teaching and learning effectiveness (88.0%), improved communication between lecturers and students (85.2%) and easy access to digital libraries and academic databases (83.3%). The findings further show that digital innovations have promoted flexible learning opportunities, improved research productivity, enhanced collaboration, and increased digital literacy among users. The Garrett ranking results reveal that inadequate internet connectivity is the most critical challenge affecting the utilization of digital innovations in North-Eastern Nigerian higher institutions, with a Garrett Mean Score of 72.41. It was followed by unreliable electricity supply (69.83), inadequate funding for digital infrastructure (66.72), and limited ICT training opportunities (63.95). The least severe challenge identified by respondents was cybersecurity concerns, although it remains an important issue requiring attention. The study recommends that government and educational stakeholders should invest in reliable broadband internet infrastructure to improve connectivity across higher institutions, higher institutions should adopt alternative energy sources such as solar power systems to mitigate the effects of unreliable electricity supply, increased budgetary allocation should be provided for the acquisition, maintenance, and upgrading of digital infrastructure and institutional management should strengthen technical support units to ensure efficient operation and maintenance of digital facilities and partnerships should be established between higher institutions, government agencies, and technology companies to support digital transformation initiatives.
