Track: Digital Transformation in Higher Education

The increasing demand for sustainability in higher education necessitates the adoption of innovative and scalable approaches, particularly within the African context. This paper contends that digital technologies provide a viable framework for promoting sustainable practices across teaching, learning, and institutional operations. It examines the potential of tools such as cloud computing, virtual learning environments, learning analytics, and smart campus systems to enhance resource efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and support flexible learning modalities. Particular attention is given to digital assessment and feedback systems, which facilitate timely, data-driven evaluation while minimizing dependence on physical materials. Beyond their pedagogical benefits, such systems contribute to sustainability by reducing paper consumption and supporting continuous academic improvement. Drawing on existing literature and emerging global practices, the paper advances a conceptual framework for aligning digital transformation with sustainability objectives in higher education. The paper also highlights key challenges, including infrastructural limitations, digital inequality, and inadequate policy frameworks, which may impede effective implementation in African institutions. It argues that the successful integration of digital technologies for sustainability requires deliberate policy direction, institutional commitment, and inclusive access strategies. The paper concludes that digital innovation, when strategically implemented, can serve as a critical enabler of sustainable higher education systems
