ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND EDUCATIONAL TRANSFORMATION IN COLLEGES OF EDUCATION IN NIGERIA: PROSPECTS FOR BUILDING FUTURE-READY HIGHER EDUCATION ECOSYSTEMS
The rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming higher education globally by improving teaching, learning, research, and institutional management. In Nigeria, Colleges of Education are central to preparing teachers for a technology-driven society, yet AI adoption in these institutions remains limited due to infrastructural and capacity challenges. This paper examines the prospects of integrating AI into Colleges of Education in Nigeria and it's potential to support future-ready higher education ecosystems. Using evidence from existing literature, policy documents, and emerging educational technology practices, the paper highlights how AI can enhance personalized learning, intelligent tutoring, automated assessment, research productivity, administrative efficiency, and student support services. It also identifies key barriers to adoption, including inadequate digital infrastructure, limited technical expertise, insufficient funding, ethical concerns, and the persistent digital divide among institutions. The paper argues that effective AI integration requires strategic investment in infrastructure, educator training, supportive policies, and partnerships between government, institutions, and technology providers. It concludes that AI has significant potential to transform teacher education in Nigeria and recommends the development of institutional AI frameworks, continuous professional development programmes, and increased investment in digital technologies to ensure sustainable educational transformation.
