Track: Digital Transformation in Higher Education

Integrating emerging technologies into teacher education is a vital pathway for transforming Africa’s education systems and equipping teachers with 21st-century skills. This paper explores curriculum innovations designed to bridge the gap between traditional teaching methods and digital imperatives. Key pillars highlighted include: developing strong infrastructure, ensuring equitable access to technology, strengthening teacher digital competence, embedding technology into pedagogy, creating localized and culturally relevant content, promoting 21st-century skills, embracing blended learning models, sustaining continuous professional development, and aligning policy with institutional practices. Drawing on examples from Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, and South Africa, the study illustrates how innovations are being applied in practice. Despite progress, challenges such as poor infrastructure, lack of teacher confidence, and weak policy implementation persist. The paper emphasizes the need for reforms that are holistic, inclusive, and contextually grounded to empower teachers as leaders of sustainable educational transformation in Africa.
