TOPIC: SCAFFOLDING EQUITY: A CURRICULUM STUDIES APPROACH TO BRIDGING THE DIGITAL DEVIDE FOR FUTURE-READY HIGER EDUCATION IN NIGERIA
Abstract
Based on Curriculum Studies and Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development, this study reimagines the university curriculum not as a static content repository but as a scaffold, equity-centered architecture responsive to contextual heterogeneity. Using a Design-Based Research approach, the study will map current digital gaps across six Nigerian universities, then co-design and pilota "Tiered Blended Curriculum Model" that complies with NUC benchmark standards for competency-based assessment, peer-mediated scaffolding, and low-bandwidth core content. Impact on digital self-efficacy, engagement, and learning outcomes will be assessed using data from surveys, interviews, learning analytics, and pre/post tests; policy implications will be validated through a Delphi approach. Findings aim to shift institutional and NUC benchmarks from measuring digital “access” to ensuring digital “equity,” offering a context-fit framework for building resilient, inclusive, future-ready higher education in Nigeria.
