Track: Digital Transformation in Higher Education

The integration of digital innovation into tertiary education has transformed pedagogical approaches across disciplines, yet its impact on the study of history in Nigerian tertiary institutions remains under-examined. This study investigates how digital tools, platforms and resources are reshaping the teaching, learning and research of history in Nigerian tertiary institutions. A mixed-methods approach was used to collect data through questionnaires and in-depth interviews from history lecturers and students across federal and state tertiary institutions, where History is studied as a Course in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The study examines the extent of adoption of digital technologies such as digital archives, online databases, GIS mapping, virtual museums, learning management systems and multimedia tools in history classrooms. Findings reveal that while there is growing awareness of digital innovation, adoption is uneven due to challenges including inadequate infrastructure, erratic power supply, limited digital literacy and poor funding. Despite these constraints, digital innovation has improved access to primary sources, enhanced students' engagements through interactive learning and enabled new historiographical methods. The study concludes that deliberate investment in ICT infrastructure, curriculum redesign and training are critical for maximizing the potentials of digital innovation in history education. It recommends policy reforms and collaborations between tertiary institutions, government and technology stakeholders to position history as a digitally relevant discipline in Nigeria’s 21st-century education landscape.
