Abstract
The study assessed the utilization of digital innovations in North-Eastern Nigerian higher institutions. It specifically determine the level of availability of digital innovations, assess the extent of utilization of digital innovations by academic staff and students and determine factors influencing the utilization of digital innovations in the higher institutions. Multistage sampling technique was adopted to sample the 209 respondents and the data obtained were analyzed using mean with the aid of lickert scale and logit regression model. The result on the availability of digital innovation shows a grand mean score of 3.63, indicates digital innovations are generally available with the online registration platforms recorded the highest mean score (4.37), followed by internet facilities (4.21) and digital libraries (4.03). However, artificial intelligence tools (2.74) and virtual laboratories (2.65) were found to be inadequately available. The result on the extent of utilization of digital innovations shows a grand mean score of 3.50 indicates a high level of utilization of digital innovations among academic staff and students. Online registration platforms (4.25) and internet facilities (4.12) were the most utilized technologies. However, artificial intelligence tools (2.48) and virtual laboratories (2.42) recorded low utilization levels. The logistic regression results indicate that educational qualification, ICT training, internet accessibility, availability of infrastructure, institutional support, electricity supply, and digital skills competency significantly influence the utilization of digital innovations. Age and gender were not statistically significant, indicating that utilization is largely determined by access, institutional factors and digital competencies rather than demographic characteristics. The study recommends that higher institutions should invest in advanced digital technologies such as artificial intelligence tools, virtual laboratories, and smart learning systems to improve educational delivery, institutional administrators should provide regular Information Communication Technologies (ICT) training and digital literacy programmes for academic staff and students as well as government and educational stakeholders should improve internet connectivity and broadband infrastructure within higher institutions.
