Abstract: Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies in African Teacher Education: Trends, Challenges, and Prospects.
This empirical study investigates the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Emerging Technologies (ETs) in teacher education across tertiary institutions in Borno State, Nigeria. With the global shift towards digital learning, African teacher education systems are increasingly challenged to incorporate technological innovations. The study will examine the awareness, accessibility, application, and pedagogical implications of AI and ETs among teacher educators. A survey design will be adopted using structured questionnaires to be administered to 120 lecturers from Borno State University Maiduguri, Ramat Polytechnic Maiduguri and Umar Ibn Ibrahim El-Kanemi College of Education, Science and Technology Bama. The data will be analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings are expected to reveal moderate awareness but limited utilization of AI tools, mainly due to infrastructural and knowledge gaps. The study recommends enhanced digital literacy programs, curriculum reforms, and institutional support to foster AI integration. Implications for policy and teacher education reform are discussed.
