Abstract
The growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies is reshaping teaching and learning across educational institutions is timely. In English Language Teaching (ELT), these innovations offer new ways of promoting learner participation, independent learning, and improved instructional effectiveness. This paper examines how AI can support digital pedagogy in advancing learner-centered approaches to English language teaching in Nigerian Colleges of Education. It discusses the concept of AI-driven digital pedagogy and highlights its relevance to contemporary language education. The paper also considers the application of tools such as intelligent tutoring systems, speech recognition software, machine translation applications, learning analytics, adaptive learning platforms, and generative AI in language instruction. The study argues that the effective use of these technologies can improve language learning outcomes by providing personalized learning experiences, timely feedback, and increased opportunities for learner engagement. In addition, AI-supported instruction can help prospective teachers develop critical thinking, creativity, digital literacy, and professional competence required in modern classrooms. Despite these prospects, several challenges continue to hinder the adoption of AI in teacher education institutions. These include inadequate technological infrastructure, limited access to digital resources, insufficient training of educators, concerns about data privacy, and ethical issues surrounding the use of AI in education. The paper concludes that the successful integration of AI into English language teaching depends on deliberate efforts by stakeholders to strengthen digital infrastructure, enhance teacher capacity, review existing curricula, and establish clear guidelines for the responsible use of AI technologies. Such measures will enable Colleges of Education in Nigeria to harness the benefits of AI while addressing the challenges associated with its adoption.
