Track: Digital Pedagogy and Teaching Innovation
In Nigeria, students continue to grapple with limited access to modern technology and outdated curricula, leaving them disengaged and ill-equipped for an increasingly digitised global music industry. This paper introduces Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based pedagogy as an emerging, distinct learner-centred approach capable of enhancing student engagement in music education. Unlike earlier digital pedagogies, AI-based pedagogy establishes a generative, dialogic relationship where students are active co-creators and critical evaluators, fostering deeper cognitive, emotional, and behavioural engagement with musical content. The paper further explores how music educators, empowered with AI literacy, can integrate these tools into existing curricula to sustain student motivation and participation without waiting for formal review cycles. Drawing on case study examples, the paper argues that AI-based pedagogy offers Nigerian music students opportunities for self-directed, engaged practice that were previously constrained by limited access or teacher availability. By situating AI-based pedagogy within Nigeria's higher education reform agenda, this paper contributes a conceptual framework for understanding AI as a co-teaching agent for enhancing student engagement in African higher education music contexts.
