This study investigated the effect of the inquiry-based teaching method on students' understanding of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in secondary schools in Imo State, Nigeria. The study was motivated by concerns about students' limited awareness and understanding of global sustainability issues despite the growing emphasis on SDG education. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was adopted. The population comprised of 6,348 secondary school students in Imo State, while a sample of 240 participants was selected using proportionate simple random techniques. Data were collected using a researcher-developed Sustainable Development Goals Understanding Test (SDGUT), which was validated by experts in Educational measurements, psychology and biology education. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was employed to test the hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that students taught using the inquiry-based teaching method demonstrated significantly higher understanding of SDGs than those taught using the conventional lecture method. The study concluded that inquiry-based teaching enhances students' understanding of sustainable development concepts and recommended its adoption in secondary schools.
