Theme: Bridging the Digital Divide: Reimagining Future-Ready Higher Education Ecosystem in Africa
Abstract
The rapid digital innovation is significantly transforming global education systems, yet higher education in Africa remains largely underprepared to harness these innovations. This paper explores digital pedagogy and teaching innovation in higher education across the continent, with a focus on the challenges, opportunities, and strategies for meaningful integration. The central problem lies in the widening gap between the evolving demand of 21st-century education and the outdated methodologies still prevalent in many Africans higher institutions. Utilizing a qualitative research approach, the study engages with educators, policymakers, and teacher-trainees across selected African countries through interviews and focus group discussions. The findings reveal critical issues such as lack of infrastructure, limited digital literacy among teacher educators, resistance to change, and insufficient policy frameworks that hinder the pedagogic innovative technologies in higher education in Africa. However, the study also uncovers promising practices and grassroots innovations that demonstrates the potential for transformative change. The paper emphasizes the need to reconceptualize higher education curricula, integrate digital competency training, and develop collaborative networks between governments, institutions, and technology companies. It concludes with actionable recommendations, aimed at equipping African higher education systems for the digital age. These include investing in capacity-building programmes, creating policy environments that support innovation, and ensuring equitable access to technological resources. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on educational technology in Africa and provides a strategic roadmap for aligning higher education with the continent’s broader goals for inclusive and future-ready learning environments.
