Track: Digital Pedagogy and Teaching Innovation

The emergence of Generative Artificial intelligence (GenAI)such as Claude and ChatGPT has significantly transformed higher education in Nigeria, especially in the teaching and assessment of Mathematics in tertiary institutions. Generative AI offers a lot of advantages in the area of personalized learning, immediate feedback and improved problem-solving skills but it also has disadvantages. This paper analyzes the opportunities and risks associated with the use of generative AI. It further examines the pedagogical shift brought by GenAI in Mathematics education. The paper in addition uses the conceptual approach based on digital pedagogy and transformation theories to explore the impact of GenAI in personalized learning, formative assessment and understanding of difficult concepts in mathematics. It also examines the challenges of cognitive dependency, digital access inequalities and academic integrity. The study further discusses the new methods of teaching from memorization to understanding of concepts such as AI-assisted learning method and adaptive instruction. The study concludes that for tertiary institutions to benefit from AI’s transformative potential, there is a need for institutional policy and framework, equitable access among learners and curriculum changes and capacity building on AI integration.
