Track: Digital Pedagogy and Teaching Innovation
This research work investigated the challenges and constraints of applying digital facilities in teaching and learning English language in public secondary schools in Yobe state. The crux of this study was to fine out to what extent teachers and students are given opportunity to use digital facilities for teaching and learning English language at secondary school level. Seventy five (75) respondents constituted the sample for this study: twenty five (25) English Language and Literature teachers and fifty (50) students. Two different sets of questionnaires for teachers and students were constructed as an instrument for the data collection, and Mean scores and standard deviation were used in analysing/describing the data collected for the research. The study emphasised that teachers and students should be aware that digital facilities have now made the tedious work of teaching and learning to be motivative, interesting, simple, educative and time saving. It was found out that, despite the numerous advantages of digital facilities in teaching and learning generally, the traditional “face to face/talk and chalk” method is still prevailing in the public schools. Public schools lack internet facilities as such, this research work advocates that the government should intensify efforts in the provision of internet facilities in the secondary schools. Teachers should shift from traditional method and embrace modern method(s) of teaching English language so as to be able to meet the challenges of the twenty first (21st) centuries.
