Track: Digital Pedagogy and Teaching Innovation
This study examined artificial intelligence (AI) integration as a catalyst for educational innovation and teaching-learning effectiveness in Nigerian Colleges of Education. A descriptive survey design was adopted, targeting 14,120 academic staff in 62 Colleges of Education across North-Central Nigeria. A sample of 386 academic staff was drawn using stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a 25-item Artificial Intelligence Integration and Educational Effectiveness Scale (AIIEES) developed by the researcher. The instrument was validated by experts in Educational Technology and Measurement and Evaluation, while its reliability was established through the test-retest technique using Pearson Product Moment Correlation, yielding a reliability coefficient of 0.87. Mean (x̄) and standard deviation (SD) were employed for data analysis. Findings revealed a moderate level of AI integration among academic staff in Nigerian Colleges of Education. The results further indicated that AI adoption contributed positively to educational innovation through enhanced lesson preparation, personalized learning experiences, improved assessment practices, increased access to instructional resources, and greater instructional efficiency. However, the extent of AI utilization remained constrained by inadequate digital infrastructure, limited AI competencies among lecturers, insufficient institutional support, and concerns regarding ethical and responsible use of AI technologies. Significant differences were observed between federal and state Colleges of Education in the availability of AI facilities and institutional support mechanisms, with federal institutions demonstrating relatively higher levels of AI integration. Based on the findings, the study recommends that: Government and educational regulatory agencies should provide adequate digital infrastructure and funding for AI-driven initiatives; Colleges of Education should organize continuous professional development programmes to strengthen lecturers' AI competencies; Institutional policies should be developed to guide the ethical and effective use of AI in teaching and learning; and Colleges of Education should establish strategic partnerships with technology providers to promote sustainable AI adoption and educational innovation.
