Abstract
Learner-centered pedagogy has become central to 21st century education, yet many Senior Secondary Biology classrooms in Nigeria still rely on teacher-dominated methods. Digital innovation offers tools to shift focus to the learner. This study is currently investigating the extent to which digital innovation advances learner-centered pedagogy in Senior Secondary Biology. The level of awareness and utilization of digital tools in Biology classrooms students’ engagement, challenges affecting their effective use, and possible strategies for improving technology-supported instruction. A descriptive survey design, will be adapted for this study, data will be collected from 200 SS2 Biology students and 20 teachers across 10 schools in Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State through a structured questionnaire Preliminary analysis is being conducted using descriptive statistical tools such as frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. Early indications suggest that digital innovations including virtual laboratory simulations, multimedia resources, educational applications, and online learning platforms may enhance students’ participation, collaboration, critical thinking, and conceptual understanding in Biology. At the same time, emerging observations point to persistent challenges such as inadequate technological infrastructure, limited access to digital devices, unstable internet connectivity, and insufficient teacher training in the use of educational technologies. The study, still in progress, is expected to contribute to understanding how digital innovation can strengthen learner-centered pedagogy in Biology education. It also aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for improving the integration of digital tools in senior secondary schools.
