Abstract
The inadequate state of chemistry laboratories and shortage of qualified chemistry lecturers in tertiary institutions in South Eastern Nigeria has necessitated the integration of digitalization. This study investigated the effectiveness of STEM approach through Simulation integration into chemistry teachings and practicals. 200 chemistry students and 25 lecturers were sampled from 8 institutions in South Eastern Nigeria using stratified random sampling .A descriptive survey design was adopted . Questionnaires and interview guides were used for data collection. Mean, standard deviations and percentages were used for data analysis. Results revealed that only 5% of the institutions digitalize their chemistry teachings and practicals using virtual laboratories for practicals and simulation for chemistry teachings. The level of integration of simulation tools such as PhET, ChemCollective and Virtual labs in Chemistry teaching was low with a grand mean of 2.15 on a 4 point scale. The prospects of digitalization were increased learning and retention among the students, reduction in the cost of chemicals ,safer conducts of dangerous experiments and increased manpower. Challenges include poor power supply, poor internet connectivity and inadequate ICT training for lecturers
