Track: Digital Pedagogy and Teaching Innovation
The landscape of higher education teaching and learning has undergone a profound reconfiguration over the past two decades, driven by the convergence of digital technologies, evolving pedagogical theory, and shifting expectations about what constitutes meaningful learning. This article offers a broad examination of digital pedagogy as both a field of practice and an evolving philosophy of teaching, with particular attention to how digital innovation has enabled — and in some cases compelled — a decisive shift away from instructor-centred, transmission-based models of teaching toward learner-centred approaches that prioritise active engagement, personalisation, agency, and authentic application of knowledge. The article surveys the conceptual foundations of learner-centred pedagogy and digital pedagogy as intersecting traditions; examines a wide spectrum of digital innovations — including adaptive learning systems, collaborative and active-learning technologies, flipped and blended models, gamification, artificial intelligence-enabled tutoring and feedback, learning analytics, and immersive technologies — and analyses their pedagogical rationale, evidence base, and comparative adoption across institutional and disciplinary contexts. The analysis gives sustained attention to the tensions and risks accompanying this transformation, including digital inequity, the uneven readiness of teaching staff, the contested role of generative artificial intelligence in assessment and authorship, and the danger of mistaking technological novelty for pedagogical improvement. The article concludes by proposing an integrative orientation for institutions and educators: that digital innovation should be evaluated and adopted not on the basis of technological sophistication, but on the basis of its demonstrated capacity to deepen learner agency, engagement, and meaningful understanding.
