The third international workshop of SSRN (Small Satellite Research Network) is dedicated to the development of innovative payloads for small satellites. Due to the recent progress in miniaturization, photonics, and integrated electronics, small satellites are becoming increasingly important for advanced payloads. They provide a cost-effective, rapidly deployable platform for demonstrating and scaling advanced technologies in space. Satellite constellations enable frequent technology upgrades, distributed architectures, and global coverage, which is especially interesting for quantum and communication payloads. To address the requirements of this complex instruments and constellations, on-board data reduction with innovative processing approaches with emerging computing technologies, is of particular interest. The activity and strategy of the ESA_Lab@Austria is addressed in a dedicated session and a laboratory visit.
