In addition to conventional matter the theory of the strong interaction predicts a number of exotic hadrons whose internal structure is more complex. Such exotic particles include e.g. glueballs composed only of gluons and hybrids. The understanding of such exotic states contributes to the fundamental question of how mass is generated via strong interaction and how states are formed in hadronization processes. This talk will present recent experimental results and future avenues. It will further give a state of the art overview of analysis tools - such coupled channel amplitude analyses - and phenomenological modeling.
