How to get to Bristol?

  • Bristol has its own airport (BRS) but it is not served by transatlantic flights.
  • If you're travelling from the US or somewhere without a direct flight to Bristol, there are a number of options:
    • Fly to London Heathrow (LHR) and take the National Express coach (direct) to Bristol Bus & Coach Station. Coach leaves outside Terminal2/3 and takes just over 2h. (Note: coach is cheaper and direct, while train requires going via London Paddington and changing there.)
    • Fly to Birmingham (BHX) and take the train from Birmingham International to Bristol Temple Meads station (requires one change at Birmingham New Street and typically takes just under 2h)
    • Fly to Bristol (BRS) via e.g. Amsterdam or Dublin and take the Airport Flyer Coach or a Taxi to Bristol city centre.
  • For both National Express Coaches and trains it is recommended to book well in advance as tickets will be significantly cheaper. Coach is usually quite a bit cheaper than train. For trains, return tickets are often just marginally more expensive than a single journey.

How to get around Bristol?

  • Most destinations in Bristol are reachable by foot and a 20-30min walk. The City Centre and Old Town are close to the Harbour, and the University is approximately a 20min walk away (but uphill).
    • The main bus operator is First Bus, you can buy tickets via their app or "tap in" and "tap out" with a contactless payment card, or with card from the driver.
    • Check the "Travelling to the University" section here: https://www.bristol.ac.uk/maps/how-to-get-here/
    • The No. 72 bus service from Bristol Temple Meads train station runs approximately once and hour and stop at Tyndall Avenue on the Clifton campus. The journey takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
    • The No. 8 bus service from Bristol Temple Meads train station. This runs at least every 10 minutes at peak times and stops by The Berkeley pub on Queen's Road, opposite the Wills Memorial Building, before heading towards the Richmond Building (Students' Union) and Clifton village. The journey takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
    • The 1, 2, 2a, 3, 4, 5 and 77 bus services. These all stop in the Park Street, Triangle, Whiteladies Road area, two minutes walk from the Clifton campus.Public transport around Bristol is usually by bus
  • For shorter distances e-scooters and e-bikes might be suitable and are a popular way to get around: https://travelwest.info/e-scooter-e-bike-hire/
    • Taxis: Uber operates in Bristol, Veezu is another taxi service.
