Description
For mixed ion beams, two different ion species with the same charge-to-mass ratio are accelerated simultaneously. This contribution refers to mixed He and C beams for medical applications in ion beam therapy. The heavier C ions with lower range are used for the treatment while lighter primary He ions pass the patient. Since both ion species are extracted at the same velocity, the range of C in the patient can be estimated by an energy loss measurement of He allowing for online range monitoring. In order to perform range verification, the calorimeter measuring the primary He after the patient needs to be capable of dealing with medical rates as well as have the possibility to separate He ions from the fragments of C.
This poster presents a time of flight calorimeter setup based on single-sided low gain avalanche diode (LGAD) strip sensors which can cope with high particle rates and allow for a precise timing with a time resolution in the order of 30 to 50 ps. Experiments with mixed He and C beams were conducted at MedAustron for testing the particle identification capabilities of the setup together with first range measurements with various phantoms.
