Description
Future collider calorimeters will require highly granular, precision-timed photon detection to fully exploit the spatial and temporal development of particle showers. We present FLASH, a digital SiPM concept based on SPAD arrays with direct single-photon time stamping at the O(10–50 ps) level. This architecture replaces integrated analog waveforms with sparse, time-tagged photon hits, providing a path toward scalable, low-noise, high-granularity optical calorimetry. We present studies of the sensor architecture and its expected performance, together with ongoing development toward a prototype device through a recently funded SLAC LDRD. We also discuss integration with an HG-DREAM-like dual-readout calorimeter, where photon-level timing could provide additional information on the development of hadronic showers and enable new reconstruction techniques for future collider detectors.
