Description

Field emission or 'dark current' in the CLARA electron source(s) has been studied and monitored on the CLARA accelerator at Daresbury for its entire history. Dark current is an important topic in electron guns, usually for its potential negative consequences, and is the subject of study worldwide in many accelerators and gun development programmes at accelerator laboratories. We outline recent and past dark current measurements and observations of CLARA gun dark current, including during the recent CLARA exploitation programme of 2025/2026.
