In light of supporting all interested scientists to participate, we would like to inform you that the workshop will run in hybrid mode, with both in person and online attendance possible.

Scientific Rationale

The evolution of Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars is characterized a large variety of processes: from pulsation and dust formation to internal mixing, nuclear burning, and strong mass loss, resulting in a significant role of these stars in the chemical evolution of galaxies, and including the production of the chemical elements needed for life. In the era of large telescopes and monitoring surveys with a largest amount of available multi-wavelength data in the history, the interpretation of AGB phenomena needs a multifaceted approach. Our aim is to bring together researchers from the different fields of AGB and stellar pulsation to discuss the open questions related to AGB stars, especially connecting their variability and different classifications.

Specifically, the aim of the workshop is to cover and discuss:
  • Observational and modelling characterization of the changing pulsation through the evolutionary process of AGBs
  • Changes in chemical composition, and their relation with and impact on the pulsation properties and the presence of the long secondary period
  • The role of binaries and planets in the appearance of the long secondary period

Via common discussion we plan to identify possible solutions as well as plan future efforts to solve these current problems.
