Description

I will construct an EFT on a Schwinger-Keldysh contour for an open mechanical system with degrees of freedom belonging to a group, e.g. rigid body in a thermal bath. The structure of the EFT will be fixed by the time reversal and the group symmetry. I will discuss the phenomenologically important limits of linear response and of ohmic dissipation and the constraints posed by these limits on the form of the effective action. I will compare these constraints to those imposed by the KMS symmetry. I will illustrate everything on a particular example. I will comment on the possibility of modelling the full system, rigid body + bath, with a non-linear sigma model in 1+1 dimensions, generalizing the Caldeira-Leggett string model for dissipation in a quantum system.
