The DMRadio Program: First Operation of DMRadio-50L and the Path to GUT-Scale Axion Searches

Description

DMRadio-50L is a lumped-element search for axion dark matter in the 5 kHz–5 MHz range, corresponding to axion masses of order 10⁻¹¹–10⁻⁸ eV. It combines a superconducting toroidal magnet, a high-Q tunable LC resonator, and a SQUID-based readout chain operating at mK temperatures to detect the narrowband electromagnetic response induced by axion dark matter.

This talk presents the first operation of the integrated DMRadio-50L system, in which the commissioned magnet, resonator, cryogenic platform, and readout chain function together as a complete axion-search instrument. I will report the first integrated characterization of the detector and its initial deployment in an axion search as well as place DMRadio-50L in the context of the broader DMRadio program, which extends through complementary geometries such as the CAL solenoidal pathfinder and DMRadio-Core. DMRadio-50L establishes the low-frequency platform and provides a testbed for quantum sensors that could accelerate future searches. DMRadio-Core introduces a compact-magnet design that separates the pickup volume from the magnet bore, reducing the magnet's size and stored energy while preserving sensitivity. These efforts form a staged route from the first operation of a full DMRadio resonant search toward future experiments probing well-motivated GUT-scale axion dark matter.
