Description

The Joule-Thomson (JT) cryocooler precooled by Gifford-Mcmahon (GM) cryocooler features high cooling efficiency and large cooling capacity, with a compact configuration, no moving parts at the cold end, and the capability for long-distance cooling power transport, making it suitable for applications such as superconducting electric levitation, gas liquefaction, and pre-cooling of millikelvin-level cryocooler units. In this study, a large-capacity GM–JT cryocooler operating in the liquid helium temperature range is experimentally investigated. The configuration of the experimental system and the overall cryocooler architecture are described, followed by offline performance tests of the JT compressor to characterize its operating characteristics. The cooling performance of the integrated GM–JT cryocooler is evaluated under different operating conditions. The experimental results demonstrate that the cryocooler achieves a cooling capacity of 5.9 W at 4.2 K with a total input power of 9.0 kW, corresponding to a relative Carnot efficiency of 4.43%.

In this work, an experimental investigation of a large-capacity GM–JT cryocooler operating in the liquid helium temperature range is conducted. The study includes offline performance testing of the JT compressor and integrated low-temperature performance evaluation of the complete GM–JT cryocooler on a dedicated experimental platform. Cooling capacity, input power, and relative Carnot efficiency are systematically measured under steady-state operating conditions. The experimental results show that the cryocooler achieves a cooling capacity of 5.9 W at 4.2 K with a total input power of 9.0 kW, corresponding to a relative Carnot efficiency of 4.43%.
