Radiation-induced lung injury, characterized by chronic inflammation and fibrosis, limits the dose we can give in lung cancer radiotherapy. Drugs that block the inflammatory/fibrosis response have been shown to protect normal lung tissues from radiation. In this study, we wish to determine if one of these drugs also protect the lung cancer cells.
To initiate this study, we developed and...

Bacterial meningitis is a severe and potentially lethal infection of the meninges, afflicting more than a million people per year globally. Delays in treatment have been shown to increase both mortality rates and the strain on the healthcare system. In an effort to develop a near-instantaneous and clinically simple diagnostic test for bacterial meningitis, our group has shown that...

Elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) is a common postnatal complication in premature infants and poses life-threatening risks to the developing brain. While early detection is crucial to patient outcomes, limited diagnostic techniques currently exist for continuous monitoring. The objective of this work was to assess the sensitivity of cerebral hemodynamics and metabolism to abrupt increases...

    Purpose
To develop a high-resolution Raman spectroscopy (RS) technique that can detect biochemical changes induced in MC38 murine colon carcinoma cells exposed to a range of doses of ionizing radiation.

    Methods
MC38 cells were cultured on quartz substrates and irradiated using 6 MV X-rays from a medical linear accelerator to doses of 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 5 and 10 Gy. The cells...

Purpose: The overarching goal is to develop a novel microdosimetry system for investigating energy deposition and cellular responses to low-dose radiation using Raman spectroscopy (RS) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The present work focuses on establishing the MC simulation framework used to quantify stochastic energy deposition within cells and at the cell-detector interface.
