Description

In conventional thermodynamic systems, supercritical behavior in systems such as van der Waals fluids and water is now under active study both theoretically and experimentally. Although liquids and gases become indistinguishable Beyond the critical point, forming a single fluid phase, it is possible to identify liquid-like' andgas-like' behaviour in the supercritical regime. Here I will discuss how to extend these considerations to black holes. I will show how an application of the Lee-Yang phase transition theorem can yield a comprehensive phase diagram for charged AdS black holes. Specifically, a generalization of the Widom line can be constructed -- as the system crosses this line in the supercritical region, the black hole goes from exhibiting liquid-like' behaviour togas-like' behaviour, without any discontinuities appearing in thermodynamic state functions.
